My wife suffers from shingles - occasionally. She gets flare ups at times of severe stress (work very bad, buying and selling a house, etc). She tried a "pain reliever" which I heard about on the radio - and it gave substantial short term pain relief - eating hot peppers.

The active ingredient in hot peppers helps ease shingle pain. I am not sure of the dosage - my wife loves hot food, and really throws the chilis on there. It took a substantial dose to make a difference in her pain, and I am not sure if smaller doses for people not used to them will have the same effect.

Worth a try, at any rate.
