Synonyms.—Quininae Iodidum; Quinine Iodide.

Quinine hydriodide, C₂₀H₂₄N₂O₂, HI, may be prepared by precipitating a solution of 20 of quinine hydrochloride in 500 of hot water with a solution of 12 of potassium iodide in 30 of water. The precipitate thus obtained is washed, and dried in a dark place at a gentle heat. It occurs in the form of pale yellow crystals or powder, and contains 71.71 per cent. of quinine. A mixture for extemporaneous use, composed of quinine sulphate, 95, and potassium iodide, 40, corresponds to 100 of quinine hydriodide.

Slightly soluble in water; freely soluble in hot water, alcohol, or ether.

Action and Uses.—Quinine hydriodide has been given for tuberculosis and chronic rheumatism. It is best administered in cachets.

Dose.—½ to 3 decigrams (1 to 5 grains).
