Judith,

The single most useful herb for a healthy mouth and gums is Garden or Red Sage [Salvia off]. Make up a jug of strong tea, add a little salt and use as a gargle/mouthwash daily. It will keep in the 'fridge for 5 or 6 days. If you look around you should also be able to buy herbal toothpaste with sage and other herbs.

For infected gums, tooth abcesses etc use Echinacea tea as a mouth wash.

There are many recipies for natural skin care products too many to go into here, but it is easy to find useful books, buy the ingredients, roll up your sleves and have a go... endless hours of fun will follow.

About oils... many oils have their advocates, much depends on the individual skin. Vegetable oils do absorb a little into the skin, but oils do not hydrate the skin. Water hydrates the skin, more effectivly if carried in an emulsyfying base. The purpose of the oil is to stop the water evaporating. The fun is in experimenting, with very little practice anyone can make skin care products as good as any on the market.
